Description
Arthur Koestler's first novel, set in the late Roman Republic, tells the story of the revolt of Spartacus and man's search for Utopia. The first of three novels concerned with the 'ethics of revolution', it addresses the age-old debate of whether the end justifies the means, an argument continued in his classic novels Darkness at Noon and Arrival and Departure.Tags

This the story of the Spartacus revolt. It is written from a left-wing perspective, and was more to my taste than the later Kirk Douglas Movie. i probably read the 1966 reprint .
Though I like Koestler's "Darkness at Noon" better, this was still an interesting read about Roman history, Spartacus, and the slave rebellion. Even with 3 stars, it's worth reading.
3784. The Gladiators, by Arthur Koestler (read 18 Aug 2003) This is a 1939 novel about Spartacus and the slave revolt of about 90 B.C. He had amazing success against Roman armies though of course he lost eventually. I could not get very interested in the book, which seems "German" with much discussion of questions about freedom, etc., which do not seem as exciting now that Communism is not the threat it was in 1939--this book was written just after Koestler left the Communist Party.
