Description
Called the "Tenth Muse" by the ancients, Greece's greatest female lyric poet Sappho (ca. 610-580 b.c.e.) spent the majority of her life on the famed island of Lesbos. Passionate and breathtaking, Sappho's poems survive only in fragments following religious conspiracies to silence her. Sappho penned immortal verse on the intense power of the female libido; on the themes of romance, love, yearning, heartbreak, and personal relationships with women. This work retains the standard numerical show more order of the fragments and has been arranged in six sections. Distinguished poet and lecturer Paul Roche's translation of The Love Songs of Sappho is enhanced with his brilliant essay, "Portrait of Sappho," as well as a lucid historical introduction by celebrated feminist and classicist Page duBois. show lessTags

I like these translations. They're more faithful than Bernard and not bad as poetry either. Ms. DuBois' introductory essay is an amusing read—she's a nut.

Sappho, whom Plato (see Vols. 3 and 4) called "the tenth Muse," was the greatest of the early Greek lyric poets. She was born at Mytilene on Lesbos and was a member---perhaps the head---of a group of women who honored the Muses and Aphrodite. Her family was aristocratic; it is said that she was married and had a daughter. Her brilliant love show more lyrics, marriage songs, and hymns to the gods are written in Aeolic dialect in many meters, one of which is named for her---the Sapphic. Mostly fragments survive of the nine books she is thought to have authored. Her verse is simple and direct, exquisitely passionate and vivid. Catullus, Ovid, and Swinburne (see Vol. 1) were among the many later poets she influenced. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
