Description

Victor Nekrasov's masterpiece Front-Line Stalingrad is one of the classic novels to come out of the pitiless fighting on the Eastern Front in the Second World War. His gripping narrative is set against the background of the grim struggle of the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany - among the battered, exhausted, outnumbered Red Army soldiers desperately defending Stalingrad. Nekrasov himself experienced the front-line fighting - he served as a sapper in the trenches and dugouts of the ruined show more city. He drew on his personal recollections in this graphic but sombrely realistic account. His writing shows the heroism, comradeship and humour of the Red Army soldiers, but also the violence and anger of men whose nerves are frayed to breaking point. His extraordinary novel, long out print, is reissued to mark the seventieth anniversary of the decisive Second World War battle. show less

Fictionalised but clearly based heavily on personal experience, this is a superb, utterly engrossing account of the battle for Stalingrad (preceded by the Red Army's chaotic retreat through Ukraine), weaving together the daily grind of battle and waiting for battle, the desperate last ditch defending, the human relationships of people from different walks of life thrown together in a life-or-death struggle, the almost surreal 'everdayness' of activities between fighting, and the soldiers' humour and attitude towards their situation. Beautifully written (Nekrasov was a very noted writer who subsequently got into trouble for his positive account of travels in Italy and the USA) and very well (although anonymously) translated, it makes show more Stalingrad terribly real and is a superb companion read to any major history of the battle or to Vassily Grossman's 'Life and Fate'. show less
