Simonov had a long career as a poet, playwright, and novelist. His poetry includes many love lyrics as well as works on historical subjects and on war. He was at his best in fiction, particularly the trilogy dealing with World War II: Days and Nights (1943--44), about the battle of Stalingrad; The Living and the Dead (1959--71), about Soviet show more defeats in the first period of the war; and Soldiers Are Not Born (1963--64), also about Stalingrad.
