This is a good, short audiobook for those new to meditation and the teachings of self-compassion. The author provides the research supporting this evidence based practice and name drops quite a few well known experts. She shares personal examples to illustrate the application of self-compassion. Each chapter ends with a meditation and opportunity to journal. ( )

If the author thinks that a good example of a stressful situation for a wide audience is being denied a safari trip to Africa because her visa is too full from so much international travel, then this book was intended for a privileged, rich, audience, not an ordinary person like myself.

With that much money I could remove the stressors from my life directly. If those kinds of things were the most stressful in my life, I'd count myself lucky and probably wouldn't be reading this book. I don't think the author has any understanding of what it means to truly be struggling.

I do think that we all need to be kind and compassionate to ourselves. Beyond that message I didn't relate to much in this book. It would be helpful to have examples that the average person could relate to, or a book title that let's us know who this book is intended for. ( )

Meditation Course
Review of the Audible Original audiobook (Jan. 2020

This is basically a meditation course and is part of Audible's The Great Courses series and consists of 10 lessons of about 25 minutes each. The writer/narrator Laurie Cameron has a relaxed and calming speaking voice which reflects the material but can also be so relaxed that your mind can wander off topic, at least it had that effect on me. The several returns to the author's own stress topic of missing their own family's African safari had a distancing effect being that it would be a trip that most people will never be able to experience.

The Power of Self-Compassion was one of the free Audible Originals for members in January 2020. It is available to everyone for a standard price. ( )
