Lady Elizabeth escapes her evil uncle and his son to get to his enemy, Sir Richard (the Black Earl). She hopes that he will aid her and her younger brother. He sees her and lusts after her immediately and upon finding out who she is, offers to marry her. He would gain some lands in the bargain and be able to attack his enemy for good reason. Lady Elizabeth has been so traumatized by her uncle and his son, that she cannot relax around her husband, and his bedding her is unpleasant. After awhile, she finds him to be a good and noble man, but won't tell him because she is afraid he will control her. He doesn't tell his wife how much he loves her and much of the book is about this misunderstanding between the two of them. There is political show more intrigue between a duke and her evil uncle and their attempt to get Sir Richard's illegitimate brother, James, to betray Richard and Elizabeth. In the end, James comes to his brother's aid and rescues them and proves to Elizabeth that he is not a traitor. It's a good book, not a great one. The middle drags on with the misunderstanding, but has a happy ending (but no epilogue). show less
