Versión española de la obra original inglesa de idéntico título, publicada por ‘Macmillan London Limited’, Londres, 1978. De su traducción fue responsable Jesús Fernández Zulaica. “Quizás el único plano memorable de ‘Novecento’, el filme de Bernardo Bertolucci, sea aquél con que comienza: en medio de la noche, un arlequín, deshecho en llanto, desciende por un camino, acercándose hacia la cámara. Entre sus gemidos, podemos entender tan sólo esta frase: ‘Giuseppe Verdi è morto!’. Es, sin duda, una manera alusiva, hermosamente oblicua, de fechar el relato”, escribe José Luis Téllez en su ‘Prólogo’ titulado ‘La sabiduría del arte al servicio de la vida’
