I'm not sure if it can achieve its purpose in helping many people to write a song, but as I listened to Tweedy read his own work (in one sitting, since it's only about 3 hours long), I was more and more taken by the attitude and philosophy, which can be applied not just to songwriting, but to any type of writing, and pretty much to living life in general. Coming from a man who has had his share of problems along with great success, every word rings true, and I found myself quite moved from time to time. Recommended. And definitely this time, the audiobook, is to be preferred over the print book.
"How to Write One Song" by Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy describes the creative process involved in getting that song from your head and onto the page. There are no tricks or gimmicks, it's all about hard work, dedication and allowing your creative process to flow. Okay, getting a hit song does depend at least in part on individual talent and a touch of luck, but anyone can put a song on the page if they allow their creative self to come forward. Entertaining and easy to read.
Jeff Tweedy, frontman and songwriter for Wilco, demonstrates to readers in this wonderful, inspirational, short book just how the process of songwriting works. This book focuses on the process of songcraft, and the joy of creation, and is full of helpful exercises and advice. It's also a fascinating read to understand the mind of one of the best songwriters of the last twenty years or so.
Funny, no-nonsense, don't-blame-me-if-you-don't-do-this approach that offers multiple ways in. One of the best writing books I've read.
Reads a lot like so many writing prompts books, but I enjoyed it.
Almost completed in bookstore.
As always, Jeff is insightful and easy to follow, unpretentious and just plain awesome.

- Dedication
- I'd like to dedicate this hopeful little book to all the songs to come. Yours and mine. To all of those moments to unfold where we find ourselves awake to a possibility we hadn't anticipated. To all of the songs like windows,... (show all) open just enough for us to make our escape, and to all of the songs like windows, closed and clear enough in a dim light to see our own reflection and be reminded of who we are. Not one of these songs will come to save any of us for very long. But keep writing and waiting and watching life as it reveals itself to us slowly over time. Each song and each act of creativity, indeed, is an act of defiance in a world that often feels determined to destroy itself. The songs we have yet to write will always be more important than the songs we've already sung, and certainly more important than the songs we never bring to life. I hope you, dear reader, will take this book in the spirit it was written - as a humble request to write your one song today and tomorrow and each day after that. We have a choice - to be on the side of creation, or surrender to the powers that destroy.
