A dark lesbian romance retelling of the Hades/Persephone abduction story, set in mythological ancient Greece. In the land of the dead, Queen Hades' word is law. Hades gets what she wants-always-and what she wants is a certain goddess of the springtime. Innocent Persephone chafes beneath her mother's hawkish gaze and mercurial temper. Demeter has rebuffed all her daughter's suitors, but she is not yet satisfied; she strives to crush Persephone's spirit. Still, when Hades pulls her into the dark realm of the underworld, Persephone longs for the world above, even if it means an eternity under her mother's thumb. With her tears and pleas for freedom ignored by pitiless Hades, Persephone must learn to satisfy her keeper in all ways, lest she suffer the consequences. And though she cannot deny that something blooms within her, something forbidden, Persephone despairs of ever feeling the sun upon her skin once more. No matter the cost, Hades intends to keep her. Forever. * * * Captive in the Underworld is a standalone dark lesbian romance audiobook set in mythological ancient Greece. It is rooted in the misogyny and cruelties of the Hades/Persephone myth and contains sensitive material. Due to mature content and dark themes, this audiobook is intended for adult readers only. It contains scenes depicting non-consensual sex, death, abuse, kidnapping, assault, and other intimate partner violence. It is not recommended for readers sensitive to such content. Fifty shades of gender-bent Hades?

This is a difficult one and I hate to rate it so low, but I really can’t forgive the lack of consent and minor masochism/abuse. A shame as it could have been such an amazing book, I really, really loved every other aspect.

"I brought you a gift, if you would permit me."
"Is it another severed head? I can't promise I won't
throw up."
"I have murdered no demigods as of late. The adminis-
trative fallout was bad enough the last time."

This book has everything I am weak for. Honestly. I love Hades so much, she’s supportive, badass, a warrior, managing to rule in a misogynistic Man’s world, she is kind, funny, protective and caring.
-Except at the beginning with Persephone. She strips her without her consent, then ties her up and rapes her. Also spanking and receiving 100 lashes from her and being left tied to a tree..

The sex is mostly not violent or entirely unwanted, but it is not consensual.
It’s so, so unnecessary and ruins the book, it’s almost forgivable but… Not really.

She does empower and believe in her and challenge her to do things herself and believe in herself, in every other part of her life except in the bedroom.

I’d like to believe they get over it and get past the toxic lack of power balance in the relationship fairly quickly, Hades does explain, apologise and change for the better. But the initial rape just isn’t forgivable.

Well written apart from the random chapter from demeters perspective, there are some really funny and adorable moments but I just wish would edit to allow for a little less rape… that would be great

Reminds me of rhysand and Feyre

"Our marriage places you under my protection and proves to the other gods that you are mine. It could not be delayed any longer. But binding yourself to the underworld is a choice you will make for me and only for me.'
-this is much better, a little too late, but better
