Murder at the Castle

On her well-deserved retirement from public life, Angela hopes to enjoy a quiet life with husband Achim and bodyguard Mike in their old house in a pleasantly obscure village in the Uckermark. But of course it doesn’t work out like that: there’s a suspicious death and suddenly a new career as central character of a series of cosy mysteries seems to be opening up. But is she going to be Sherlockine or Miss Merkel …?

Of course, this is the sort of idea that always sounds funnier in the jacket-copy than it can ever live up to, but David Safier is an experienced comic novelist and does what he can with it. There are some nice running jokes about the way both Angela and Achim still think like scientists and like people who grew up in the show more DDR, there’s an irritating small dog called Putin, and there’s Angela’s determination to feed poor Mike up with impossible quantities of homemade cake, but it’s a bit of a stretch to make those things fill out a whole book (let alone a series). The murder mystery — involving a Freiherr found dead in his locked wine cellar wearing a suit of armour — is fairly feeble, but should be just about enough to satisfy fans of village cosies.. show less

Sabía que el libro era ridículo (¿Angela Merkel como detective de ocasión?) y que obviamente iba a ser un misterio "cozy", pero lo que en un principio me atrajo fueron todas las bromas y alusiones al tiempo en el que la canciller estuvo en funciones, como por ejemplo esta:

Aunque se sentía eufórica ante la perspectiva de pedirle cuentas a una asesina, al mismo tiempo era consciente de que nunca se había puesto en una situación tan peligrosa. Ni siquiera cuando volaba a Afganistán. Ni en las manifestaciones de extrema derecha. Ni cuando Silvio Berlusconi la quiso abrazar.

Toda la primera mitad del libro está llena de este tipo de bromas, pero a partir de un poco antes de la mitad, desaparecen y uno se queda con un misterio "cozy" show more y con una detective que se comporta cada vez más como una adolescente turulata que no sabe lo que está haciendo y menos como una excanciller, en otras palabras, se vuelve estúpidamente "cozy".
Y el final es una pendejada que se podría adivinar desde la mitad del libro, si no fuera porque para cuando llegué a esa parte ya ni siquiera recordaba por qué o para qué lo estaba leyendo. De hecho, después de que se revela quién es la asesina (desde un inicio el autor decide que no haya sospechosos, sólo sospechosas), solo cinco páginas más adelante, no podía recordar cuál había sido el motivo de la asesina, así de interesante estuvo el por qué.
Y luego hay que agregar que la traducción no es ninguna maravilla: está atarragada de "españolismos coloquiales" que hacen que la historia se vuelva ridícula y difícil de entender.
Lo único que me gustó y que no cambia en toda la novela, es la relación de su Angela Merkel con su marido, Achim. La relación es súper tierna y muy amorosa. Muy raro de ver en estos días en que el "romance" lo infiltra todo. show less

Achtung: Bei diesem Buch handelt es sich keineswegs ( ;-) ) um ein biografisches Werk über Angela Merkel - auch wenn ich sie charakterlich ganz wunderbar gut getroffen finde.

Die Altbundeskanzlerin zieht samt ihrem Achim, Personenschützer Mike und dem Mops mit Namen Putin (den Krieg gegen die Ukraine hat sein menschlich-reales Pendant erst nach dem Erscheinen des Buches begonnen) in die Uckermark nach, der Name soll wohl Programm sein, "Klein-Freudenstadt". Dort möchte sie sich neu einrichten und Teil der Gemeinschaft werden, was sich allerdings als ein Weg mit überraschenden Hürden erweist - zumal gleich einmal ein Mord passiert.

Warum sich Miss Merkel recht umstandslos in die Rolle der ungefragten Ermittlerin begibt und damit auch show more noch durchkommt, ist nicht so restlos überzeugend, aber um so witziger, wie überhaupt das ganze Buch. Achim Sauer und Mike sind herrlich schrullige liebenswerte Charaktere, die Dialoge haben Witz. Eine kurzweilige, nette, ideale Sommerlektüre. show less

Ich fand dieses Buch über Angela Merkels zweites Leben als Detektivin ziemlich charmant. An ihrem ihrem neuen Wohnsitz stolpert sie über einen Mordfall, den sie natürlich auf ihre gewohnte lakonische Art löst. Als Sidekicks hat sie ihren Mann Joachim Sauer und ihn Bodyguard Mike. Beide Figuren sind gut ausgearbeitet. Das Buch ist also etwas übertrieben, aber wirklich nett zu lesen.

Angela Merkel entame une retraite bien méritée dans un petit village allemand entourée de son mari, de son garde du corps et de son chien Poutine. Quand le baron local est retrouvé mort, elle se lance dans l’enquête. Un ‘cosy mystery’ loufoque, joyeux, plein de bons mots et de rebondissements et un page-turner sans prétention.

Les personnages sont bien maitrisés et pas du tout maitrisables ;-) une très agréable fantaisie.
