Excellent modern weird tales. The tale "Smoke Ghost" is sublime.

Why did Leiber bother writing SF? He was superbly at home with the weird tale (of which this little book contains some prime examples), and was not a slavish Lovecraft imitator like so many of his generation. And of course he attempted just about every fantasy style in the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stories.

This later edition has two stories that are absent from the 1947 original, "The girl with the hungry eyes" (1949) and "Bit of the dark world" (1962), and one ("Adept's gambit") that was omitted in the 1961 Ballantine edition. Do not combine the editions.
