Fifteen young adult authors and one real-life rock star band together for one epicâ??and interconnectedâ??take on a memorable high school rite of passage.
A daughter of rock 'n' roll royalty has a secret crush. A lonely ticket taker worries about his sister. An almost-famous songwriter nurses old wounds. A stage manager tires of being behind the scenes. A singer-songwriter struggles to untangle her feelings for her best friend and his girlfriend. In this live-out-loud anthology, the disparate protagonists of sixteen stories are thrown together for one unforgettable event: their high school's battle of the bands. Told in a harmonic blend of first- and third-person narrative voices, roughly chronological short stories offer a kaleidoscopic view of the same transformative night. Featuring an entry from Justin Courtney Pierre, lead vocalist of Motion City Soundtrack, Battle of the Bands is a celebration of youth, music, and meeting the challenges of life head-on.

Lovely and diverse collection of stories about music - I liked it a lot.

I enjoyed like, 85% of this interlinked stories anthology. It flowed fairly well from one story to the next. I skimmed only two, which is high praise from me. ( )

Oh, I really loved this. The only thing I might have wanted would have been little notes someplace about what books the characters came from originally. I could figure it out for the most part, but it would have been an easy add for the book and would have made things simpler, especially since I wasn't familiar with many of the characters. That having been said, you didn't strictly need to know them to enjoy the book! (I imagine knowing them all would have made for deeper immersion and subsequent entertainment, though.) The concept was a timely one, and I think many of my library teens will like this.

An impressively cohesive series of short stories with a central theme, a band competition at a New Jersey High School. The authors have woven their individual players in a way that not only keeps them unique, but gives readers a sense of how many of them are connected, whether it be by romantic relationship, competitive energy, or musical history. The characters span the spectrum from likable/sympathetic, to completely self-absorbed and ego driven. In sum, there's a story (or several) for every reader in hers and it's a collection deserving a spot on most library shelves. ( )
