This book provides a solid image of Escher as he saw himself--not as an 'artist' but as an artisan, a graphic artist with heart and soul, obsessed by contrasts and possessed by a unique creativity.

A collection of letters, speeches and lectures by the artist himself. Tremendous insight into his work, and fully illustrated with the slides he himself prepared for the lectures, most in color. Escher reveals himself here as a deep thinker, ruminating on math, god and the human condition. Some the the speeches were translated from the Dutch, but the lectures are as Escher wrote them in English. If you're an Escher fan, get this book. ( )
