Max Folsom has created a most likable heroine in former cop turned private investigator Baker. From her unusual name to her often humorous gut reactions and reflections to what she encounters as she tries to figure out why and how a dead body landed in her office doorway, to her relentless pursuit of how this death might be connected to an unsolved kidnapping case in her past, Baker’s musings become ours. What Baker and her wonderful team uncover has business, financial, and military connections. In short, One Bad Day After Another is about greed and crime on an international scale. It’s rare for me to write a review immediately after reading a book: it takes me a few days to decide on the most memorable aspects of that book. As I pondered One Bad Day After Another by Max Folsom, it was easy to home in on the key positives: a very clever plot with enough twists to keep any reader guessing; good plot pacing; excellent use of dialogue; a smooth writing style and above all, the enjoyable interplay between the characters. But there was one takeaway that outshone the others: the engaging and winning personality of the protagonist, Baker Somerset. She is what I will most remember about One Bad Day After Another. She is often downright funny, sometimes frightened to death, but ever curious. Readers identify closely with Baker: she is just so human! The plot facts as they evolve are unexpected, convoluted, and intriguing. But it’s Baker herself that makes us want to solve this mystery as much as she does. For lack of a better word, this novel ends up being a lot “larger” than just another simple murder mystery. Belongs to Series
Baker Somerset was a Scotland Yard Detective sent to Ottawa to help solve a brutal kidnapping case. After the suspect put four bullets in her, she decided to stay in Ottawa and open her own detective agency. One morning, the body of a British diplomat is found at her office door. Hunting his killer, she learns the murder is tied to the kidnapping that brought her to Canada, and in the process, she unearths bribery, fraud, and illegal activity in the military arms and equipment industry. With billions of dollars at stake, the perpetrators play rough; willing to kill anyone who stands in their way. As the risks to her life and career multiply and bodies begin to pile up, Somerset enlists her friends: Duchess "Keys" Brown, a vivacious Jamaican computer guru; Joe Manning, a martial arts expert; and Charles Stroud, her old Scotland Yard partner. They sift through a maze of conflicting evidence, numerous dead ends, and frightening danger to bring those responsible to justice. ONE BAD DAY AFTER ANOTHER is a book for crime and mystery enthusiasts. Infusing the fast pace and high stakes of modern thrillers and hard-boiled detectives' 'take no prisoners' attitude into the traditional mystery genre, Folsom delivers a nail-biting story. Baker Somerset, the tough, determined PI won my heart almost immediately; she is vulnerable too - but she admits that privately only to herself. And what can be more appropriate, defining, and promising than a private investigation agency called Case Closed Investigations! What is also important here is the history that the author provides from Baker's prior employment with Scotland Yard and subsequent transition into PI work in Canada. It's as if we have already known the protagonist from years before, while the present moment finds her being rudely awakened to the possibility of closing a painfully important case that has been weighing on her mind from her days on the British police force.
The events are happening in Canada now, but the author's masterly take on British lingo makes Baker's British past even more authentic. What's also appealing is the genuine camaraderie among Baker's unofficial team - they pull their resources and help her with extraordinary zeal that defines only real friends; the expression of "having each other's back" cannot be overstated here. This makes for a great set of characters inhabiting Baker's world and gives a reader a wonderful feeling.
I can't wait for the next Baker Somerset novel! (
