Unique book about the title character, an opera singer with a mysterious background, gets better and better as it goes along. It turns into quite a joyous read that celebrates the power of music and a lot of other things--notably, having a good time. I haven't read anything else quite like it. It is quite funny, not in a laugh out loud way, but in little smiles of satisfaction at the author's unceasing invention and rapid movement from scene to scene. The cast of characters is large, but there is a helpful guide that starts the book.

Ignore the grating introduction ("McCourt's subsequent work go even farther into the lunatic fringe, the only place where I feel at home"), don't worry about not keeping track of the characters, and enjoy.

This is a delightful novel. The protagonist, the title character whose name is pronounced "More-dew Gorgeous" is an opera diva. Wonderful writing about opera, theater, and temperamental artists.
