This is probably the strongest My Story title I've read so far. Margaret Anne has more backbone than a lot of the series's other narrators, and her likeable, genuine voice brings necessary moments of wit to a story that we know won't end particularly happily. Her reaction to the ship's fate and the way it's handled is emotional and believable, and had me close to tears.
I don't remember much of these books as individual books, but I remember reading them all as a young, avid reader. I think that ultimately these books are the reason why I love historical fiction novels so much. They all did such a great job of taking me to a different time and place and making it come alive, seeing the world through an older, historical lens. I highly recommend any of the Dear America books to younger readers who love history and need to get hooked on reading!
Summary: This book follows Margaret who is an orphan living in London. She is granted an opportunity to join a wealthy woman on the Titanic, and she accepts because she wants to travel to America to be reunited with her brother. Margaret doesn't fit in very well with her traveling companion and her friends and discovers that it is easier to talk to the people who work on the ship. Margaret tells us about the devastating events that unfolded when the ship began to sink, and her struggle to come to terms with her survival.
Reactions: The descriptions of day to day life on the ship were really interesting. I've often wondered what it would have been like to be on such an extravagant ship, and this book does a really good job of detailing show more that. Margaret is easy to relate to, and the small romantic plot between her and Robert is sweet and so sad.
Classroom Extensions: 1. Have the kids write a journal article pretending that they were invited on the Titanic, have them write their feelings and say what they think their favorite part of the ship would have been (if it wouldn't have ended the way it did)

I'm reading the Dear America series for the first time at the age of 27, so I know I'm far from the age of the target audience, but I have to say this book was excellent. I love the diary format and am excited to continue on to other books.
This book gives fictional dairy entries about the Titanic and the life that she went through during this time in life. This is the diary of Margaret Ann Brady. In her diary in 1912, thirteen-year-old Margaret Ann describes how she leaves her lonely life in a London orphanage to become a companion to a wealthy American woman, sails on the Titanic, and experiences its sinking. This book is intended for grades level 4-10, and can be used in any social studies or history class where the students are learning of the time period of 1912 or learning about the Titanic and what the people went through during that time.
I absolutely loved reading this book. I like the way it is written as though you are inside the persons head. You are able to see what is happening from Ann's point of view. I also loved the images from the Titanic and the timeline at the end to help me further understand the events that occurred. The message of this story is to not give up, keep going even though there might seem like there's no escape.
Margaret Ann Brady is embarking on a journey to America. She is an orphan and they take the Titanic to get there. Unfortunately, she is faced with many challenges to overcome. The Titanic does not make it to America because it sinks, but luckily Margaret is among the few survivors. Margaret is a fictional character, but the circumstance in this story are based on true events. The author did a great job with making the book intriguing and understandable to younger readers. I loved this book because of my love of history and I know students will find it a great read too!
