Description

The New English Bible is a British translation which was first published in 1970. An ecumenical project in which all the British churches participated (including the Church of Ireland and the Roman CatholicChurch), it was intended to be a translation that could be used by all Christians regardless of denomination. The objective was to produce a translation 'in the language of the present day', ie to use contemporary, rather than 'biblical' English. Full account was taken of the Dead Sea show more Scrolls and of other advances in biblical scholarship. The NEB Double-Column Edition is a particularly elegant Bible, printed on India paper with striking art-gilt edges. The thinness of the paper makes it pleasingly slim: just over an inch thick. It is bound in a soft imitation leather and includes a ribbon marker. The text is presented in two columns, with comprehensive footnotes indicating parallel passages as well as translation-related notes. Chapter heads run across the top of each page, together with section headings. This edition offers a 96-page Concise Reader's Guide, compiled specially for the NEB. This gives straightforward information and guidance about the words, events, themes, customs, people and places of the Bible. show less

I'm more of a believer in Occam's Razor. However, any text that has been kicking around for thousands of years is worth a look from a purely literary standpoint, just as the Odyssey and the Ramayana are.

Apparently we're not allowed to eat shellfish!
About my Bibles

The New English Bible successfully combines readable prose with, what I am assured is, an accurate translation.

It is one of very few popular biblical translations to genuinely start from scratch, rather than just rehashing the KJV yet again. The desire to get back to the sources is, of course, an admirable one which places the editors in the tradition of Jerome, Erasmus, and Luther.

The NEB was also originally conceived as a spectacular ecumenical project, with pretty much every church body going having a hand in it.

With so much going for it, it is a pity that everyone favours the NIV (bad) and the NRSV (boring).
History of this translation's authorship, preface, introductions to the old and new testament, notes to abbreviations, makes this enjoyable reading of H.Scriptures.
Contains photos of the Holy Land.
I STARTED READING THIS 10 YEARS BEFORE I BECAME A CHRISTIAN IT TOOK ME 10 YEARS SDINCE THEN I HAVE READ A DIFFERENT VERSION OF THE BIBLE EVERY YEAR
