Fast-paced novel that at first seems shallow, about a rich girl model trying to survive and hold her head up after being photographed with her married lover, a government official, in Trinidad. But the story goes into what makes her tick, what draws women into making mistakes, and how a hard-working yuong man from the worst neighborhood becomes a success.

There is a lot of detailed information about makeup artistry and fashion. But there also is a lot about loving another person, family relationships and the use uf power. Altogether, a very enjoyable novel.

I received an advance copy of this book, thank you.

I really, really liked this book, much more than I thought I would. I figured this was going to be a book about 20-30 yr olds in the superficial beauty industry, therefore not really targeting me as a reader, being that I'm older and don't follow fashion.
Well, this book drew me in and showed a lot of depth.
This book is told from two points of view. Briana Bridges has come from a wealthy, respected family, but hasn't benefited from it or been pampered. Her mother died when she was young, and her father ignored her, she was sent off to school, and when she returned to Trinidad and Tobago, she was lost and lonely. She meets a charismatic man who sweeps her off her feet, only to discover he is married, and holds a high, influential position in government. When their affair is exposed, she's the one who loses everything, and is ostracized throughout the whole country.
Obadiah Cortland, on the surface seems incredibly successful. being the creator of one of the country's leading beauty and make up companies. He's arrogant and all knowing.
By chance the two meet, and Obadiah offers her a job, clearly letting her know that she's lucky he's even considering her.
From here the story unfolds as each tells their story. We learn of their strengths and their weaknesses, their hopes and their fears and how together, they learn they can have more influence to create something for the common good and themselves.
I found this story quite inspiring. ( )
