Description

It's all about love and holiday cheer in London. The Prime Minister is smitten with his caterer; a widower's young son nurses the ultimate schoolboy crush; a writer falls for his Portuguese housekeeper; a devoted wife and mother copes with her potentially unfaithful husband; and a lovelorn American is desperately attracted to a colleague.

A bit confusing, but overall enjoyable film exploring different kinds of 'love'. There's an all-star cast, with several different storylines running alongside each other. From a new prime minister to stand-ins for explicit scenes in a film, from a respectable business manager illicitly attracted to his PA to a bereaved husband trying to get to know his orphaned ten-year-old stepson, a wide range of emotion is explored.

Some 'adult' scenes, some poignancy, and a fair amount of low-key humour, much of which I had forgotten in the eight years since we first saw it.

Recommended, although the US rating of R seems more appropriate than the UK rating of 15.

Various love stories intersect.

It's kind of a mess (I feel like half the stories had no ending), but there are some good jokes in it.

In Tatsächlich...

--Jeff Shannon

First words
Prime Minister: Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that.... (show all) It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around.
Quotations
Billy Mack: Hiya kids. Here is an important message from your Uncle Bill. Don't buy drugs. Become a pop star, and they give you them for free!
Prime Minister: I love that word "relationship." Covers all manner of sins, doesn't it? I fear that this has become a bad relationship; a relationship based on the President taking exactly what he wants and casually ignoring ... (show all)all those things that really matter to, erm... Britain. We may be a small country, but we're a great one, too. The country of Shakespeare, Churchill, the Beatles, Sean Connery, Harry Potter. David Beckham's right foot. David Beckham's left foot, come to that. And a friend who bullies us is no longer a friend. And since bullies only respond to strength, from now onward I will be prepared to be much stronger. And the President should be prepared for that.
Daniel: [laughs] Aren't you a bit young to be in love?

Sam: No.

Daniel: Oh, well, okay... right. Well, I mean, I'm a little relieved.

Sam: Why?

Daniel: Well, because I thought it would be something... (show all) worse.

Sam: [incredulous] Worse than the total agony of being in love?

Daniel: Oh. No, you're right. Yeah, total agony.
Sam: Okay, Dad. Let's do it. Let's go get the shit kicked out of us by love.
Harry: Tell me, exactly, how long it is that you've been working here?

Sarah: Two years, seven months, three days and, I suppose, what... two hours?

Harry: And how long have you been in love with Karl, our enigm... (show all)atic chief designer?

Sarah: Ahm, two years, seven months, three days and, I suppose, an hour and thirty minutes.
Harry: Invite him out for a drink and then, after about twenty minutes, casually drop into the conversation the fact that you'd like to marry him and have lots of sex and babies.

Sarah: You know that?
Joe: Ten minutes at Elton John's, you're as gay as a maypole!
Natalie: Hello, David. I mean "sir". Shit, I can't believe I've just said that. And now I've gone and said "shit" - twice. I'm so sorry, sir.

Prime Minister: It's fine, it's fine. You could've said "fuck," and then we'... (show all)d have been in real trouble.

Natalie: Thank you, sir. I did have an awful premonition that I was gonna fuck up on the first day. Oh, piss it!
Karen: There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?

Daisy: Duh.
Prime Minister: I had an uncle called Terence once. Hated him. I think he was a pervert. But I very much like the look of you.
Sam: But you know, the thing about romance is... people only get together right at the very end.
Dec: Billy, I understand you've got a prize for our competition winners.

Billy Mack: Yes I have, Ant or Dec. It's a - it's a personalized felt tip pen.
