What a charming book! Clever and funny and with a voice that makes me wonder what the 6th Hitchhiker's Guide book might have been like if it had been written by Michael Reisman. I look forward to reading Simon's next adventure!
Digging through the archives...

Scientific superpowers, evil villains, and excellent pizza! When Simon Bloom and his friends find an old physics textbook, their lives change forever...Simon discovers he can control the laws of physics with the formulas in his book. At first, it's all defying gravity and playing with science but when two thugs show up Simon discovers there's a lot more going on than science.

The flow of the story was a little choppy at first, especially the off-site narrator thread, which never quite fit the story, but the basic plot was strong and it made me laugh. Therefore, it rateth high on my list. Plus, what graduate student hasn't felt like a sparrow? And who doesn't want to try flying? I actually read the show more scientific bits, which I usually skip in science fiction, but I was pulled into the story enough that I wanted to follow the science behind the science-bending powers. A fun, fast read.

Verdict: There's a distinct lack of good science fiction for elementary and middle grades. This story is an interesting combination of science fiction and fantasy, with an emphasis on science. Recommended for younger elementary students who can handle the length and for middle grade students whether or not they think they like science!

Revisited: This first title is only available in paperback. A sequel is out of print and the third book is only available in ebook format. This is a pity because, although these books rarely check out on their own, every time I recommend them kids love them. The author seems to be no longer writing (at least his website has no updated news since the ebook was released several years ago) which is too bad; although I don't think the writing is award-worthy, it's certainly a fun and popular read and the mix of science is a great addition.

Simon, Owen and Alyson acquire magical powers related to science and how the universe works (Simon can control gravity, Owen velocity and Alyson harnesses electricity). Their new abilities and resulting disasters attract the attention of the Union, a group of members who make sure the universe runs smoothly. A page out of the HP canon but with an edge of sarcastic (and sometimes corny) humor.
Simon Bloom, an otherwise ordinary kid, mysteriously receives a "teacher's edition" that empowers him to manipulate gravity and friction. Along with two friends, he discovers that the "teacher's edition" connects him to a scientific council of pseudo-superheroes, resulting in a science-oriented series of battles. For those who enjoy the pacing of the Alex Rider series and enjoy science, this book is a well-paced first novel in a forthcoming series.
Sorry, this was just too precious. Perhaps I'm influenced by an inferior reader, but I'm not really tempted to try the print version either. Gave up after chapter 4. Characters not interesting enough or believable. Slow and unconvincing action. Bleh.
Fast paced with snappy dialogue. Tongue in cheek.
Middle school characters. Lots of curriculum here, physics.
Simon has always wanted to fly and one day his wish comes true. He is given a book that tells the true nature of science in the world and now Simon can unleash all sorts of fun on the world around him. And beating some bad guys too of course.

Look around you. What do you see? If you're inside, you might see walls, carpeting, furniture. If you're outside, you might see grass, buildings, sky. But the world is a lot more complicated than it seems.
