Wolverine: Snikt!

This seemed familiar when I placed a hold on it from my local library's new graphic novel listing, and indeed it is a new edition of a collection of a comic book series from 2003. I think I must have read it twenty years ago, but none of it really rang a bell as I flipped through it. But that is understandable as this is not particularly memorable stuff, just being a rip-off of James Cameron's Aliens: Wolverine is transported to a post-apocalyptic world against his will to fight mutant bacteria mech-drones and their egg-laying queen. "“Drop Wolverine on it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."

The black-and-white art gallery in the back of the book shows the disservice the hideous dark-and-murky coloring job does to Tsutomo show more Nihei's linework. The choice to leave everyone's skin pure white in the midst of all the gloom gives us a ridiculous Goth Wolverine who looks more like Neil Gaiman's Sandman than our favorite Canadian mutant. show less

This rules. I love Nihei (Blame!, Biomega), so I've always wanted to read this. I figured the rerelease was as good a time as any. It's... Wolverine by Nihei, and it's exactly what you'd expect, for better or for worse; it's Logan going through a complicated structure in a dystopian future and fighting lots of horrific cybernetic creatures. If your expectations are set, it's a lot of fun. It's not deep, but it's great to see Nihei just go wild with a Marvel character. His art is wonderful as always, but getting a peek in the backmatter at what pages without coloring looked like made me feel that I would've rather just read it with his original art. The coloring is kind of superfluous in a lot of panels, and being familiar with Nihei's show more coloring style made me feel every time I saw a character's skintone that something was off--they look the wrong kind of pasty.

Just a fun romp with cool art, but don't expect an impressive story. show less

WOLVERINE: SNIKT! by manga creator Tsutomu Nihei is a dark, Matrix-inspired horror graphic novel that pulls Wolverine into a dystopian future full of robotic organisms that are threatening the last remaining humans on Earth.

I’ve read several complaints about this story being nothing more than a Matrix rip-off, and yes, it is heavily inspired by that story, but I feel the horror aspects and Nihei’s artwork really give this a unique twist and look, IMO. It has a couple of questions that could have been thought through a little more on the time travel aspect (how did these future humans know about him and his adamantium skeleton and what happened to Wolverine in this timeline’s past, for instance); this is one of those instances show more where you can’t put too much thought into the how and why, and just enjoy the story for what it is: a solo Wolverine story where he does what he does best.

I haven’t experienced Tsutomu Nihei’s art before, and I’m a fan. I want to check out some of his other work now and see if it’s just as good as his work on SNIKT!.

Short story with Wolverine traveling centuries into the future to fight out the Mandate, bio-mechanical constructs working on extermination of humanity.

Story is short because hey, is there anything that can stop the berserker from leveling everything down? Of course not.

Art is Tustomu Nihei signature Blame-asque art. Characters are not that lanky though, but in general everything is pale and there is this oppression/depression in the air. Panoramas are as ever wonderful and I gotta admit level of sound effects is much greater than in Blame, at least for the signature snikt sound of Wolverine claws.

So, in general short story, pretty straight forward, with Nihei's bio-mechanical monstrosities being very familiar to anyone who came across show more the Blame comics.

But in what it is - short berserker mad story - it is rather good.

Worth checking out for the amazing art, but the story has little substance. It's like they had a really cool Terminator-esque movie idea with all this great character and world-building, but dropped Wolverine right into the climax with minimal build up and context.

Good writing and equally good art though the story is a little over-compressed due to the the length of the comic. This is a good introduction to Nihei's art style and is definitely worth checking out. The story is available on Marvel Comics Unlimited.

Très joli dessin, beau, des cases dynamiques et bien construites, mais le scénario manque cruellement d'originalité et de complexité. Un bon bonbon à déguster, mais qui s'oublie trop facilement.
