Mary Thomas’s Book of Knitting Patterns
Hodder & Stoughton 1947
This book shows many variations of basic knit and purl patterns. There are explanations of the differing elasticity of different stitches and recommendations for the use of each pattern are given. For some of the stitches, Mary explains alternative names and how the names were derived.
The chapters include Cross and cross-over motifs, slip-stitch motifs, Ladder and hemstitch motifs, faggot stitch, Bias Fabrics, Lace fabrics, embossed motifs, medallion knitting, picot point knitting, and filet lace.
The chapter on medallion knitting is of particular interest. Squares, pentagons, hexagons, octagons and circles are considered, knitted in rounds and flat.
There are full show more explanations of different types of increasing and decreasing and the effects created. show less
