A mediocre history of Abraham Lincoln's assassination by an author too willing to blur the line between fact and legend.
The pictures and illustrations are the best part, though they aren't particularly revelatory. I also find it of questionable taste to show before and after photographs of an actual execution in a juvenile history.
This is one of those odd books in our home library that has been hanging around unread since my wife or my 1970s childhood.
FOR REFERENCE:
Contents: Prologue. Appomattox -- Chapter 1. Dream Remembered -- Chapter 2. Last Day -- Chapter 3. Preparation for Murder -- Chapter 4. The Killer Strikes -- Chapter 5. Vigil over a Dying Hero -- Chapter 6. Home Forever -- Chapter 7. Flight into Darkness -- Chapter 8. Death show more for the Slayer -- Chapter 9. The Slate Wiped Clean -- Epilogue. The Lincoln Legend show less

Alternate title: O Captain! The Death of Abraham Lincoln. This is a vintage Scholastic edition, copyright 1968. Includes numerous historic photos, drawings, paintings on most pages. Even including slick contemporary books on Lincoln for children, I've never seen a better book on the death of Lincoln. Not a life biography of the president. Events begin with the Civil War. Highly recommend.

- Epigraph
- O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vess... (show all)el grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
