Being the first, and most interesting, volume of Gay's six volume opus on the life of the Victorian bourgeoisie. The volume deals with sexuality, and if Gay doesn't quite shatter the paradigm of Victorian prudery, he at least gives it a good hard wobble. His use of diaries and the back pages of the newspapers of the day is magnificent and could serve as a model for social historians. ( )
