In Bradley's first novel, "Ruthie's Gift," she relayed some of her own grandmother's memories, reorganized and fictionalized into a story. After finishing that book, she thought one of her invented characters there had her own story to tell, and "One-of-a-Kind Mallie" is that tale. It's a much better story than "Ruthie's Gift," which spawned it.
Set during World War I, this is the story of Mallie, who is a twin, one half of Hallie and Mallie. At 10, she is sick of always being half of a pair instead of being herself. She longs to be an individual, and this is a book about her search for that.
Her struggle to be seen as an individual gets her in a great deal of trouble as she makes bad decisions about the best way to reach her goal of show more individuality. I empathized with her, and could feel her struggle and pain, as her twin sister got so angry she wouldn't speak to her... as she disappointed and angered her mother again and again... as she embarrassed herself in front of her school friends, and eventually the whole town.
Eventually, of course, Mallie gets through to the people she cares about. She is a believable and very human child.

One of a kind maille is a book about a girl wanting her way.but i thought this book is for younger readers and was not interesting me. if it had been a little more detail and more interesting i probably would've kept reading. It did not interest me how sisters were fighting how maille wants to be independent
