Powerful for it's portrayal of a family that leads with love, this was a truly beautiful book, wonderfully illustrated and compellingly told. The characters were easily identifiable and beautifully described. An excellent book through and through.
Just like the author's book "Gus wanders off" this is a very well written children's book. The illustrations are wonderful which should come to no surprise seeing who the illustrator is, E. B. Lewis. I loved the simple story of a young girl trying so hard to make her parents happy by bringing home eggs all by herself. I especially loved that her parents are understanding and do not get mad or punish her when things don't go as planned. This reminds me of the saying when life gives you lemons make lemonade, in this book it would say when life gives you apples make apple pie.
This is a sweet story of a girl on her first solo errand. Taking everything VERY SERIOUSLY she makes it to the store and ALMOST back when... well... she doesn't. She gets a bit... distracted. And with eggs, that's never a good thing. Luckily she has kind and sympathetic parents who understand that she is just young, after all, and everything turns out all right.
What a great book over all! I thought this book was a great lesson book and the pictures were some what different from other books I have read that were illustrated by E. B. Lewis. They were inside boxes for most the book. Anyways, this gave a great lesson about growing up and being trusted with small tasks to prove you can do it! It also gave the lesson that you should tell an adult when something has happened. If you're honest then its better. Since it was Hetty's first time doing something mama and papa were not made and they made the best out of a cracked egg situation and used what they DID have... apples! apple pie for breakfast, yummy!!
Down the Road is about a young girl who offers to pick up eggs for her parents, and winds up breaking the eggs. Her parents find her sitting in an apple tree and instead of getting upset they all decide to sit and talk in the tree together. E.B. Lewis shows the very detailed journey of the little girl’s journey to find eggs, and manages to show her curiosity and independence through the pictures.
This story is a realistic fiction with a simple story that is very relatable for children. Hetty is given a simple job that she asked for before she thought she could handle it, and ended up not being able to do it. This book shows the reader that being honest and trying your best is always what parents expect and they will not get in trouble for at least trying. Also, it is okay to be a kid and not be able to do grow up things yet. There are reasons why adults say children cannot do certain things before they are old enough.
Down the road was a wonderful book. It displayed many things such as the love of a family. This book is about a young child learning responsibility that her parents give her by letting her go to the store alone to get eggs. Hetty was sacred of going home because she made a mistake by breaking the eggs and was worried that she had let her parents down. Her parents did not yell at her about making the mistake but told her that it’s okay to make mistakes sometimes. The pictures were amazing; they match perfectly with the text in the story. This book has great synergy by converying a mood or tone. For example on the pages where she started to walk down the road and she began to sing the ways she will carry the eggs home without breaking show more them. When the eggs break her face changes to being upset and when she is running she has a smile on her face. This is a wonderful book to read with your family. show less
