The cat of the house is taken aback when a new cat arrives, but quickly catches the newbie up on all the mischief that cats must do. In rhyme.

Ugh.

My family is a dog household, and I always wonder how cat books like this made it into our personal library.

I really liked this book primarily for two reasons. First, I was really drawn to the style of the illustrations. The style is strikingly similar to that of Eric Carle’s illustrations. In fact, I actually read the book because I assumed it was an Eric Carle book when I first saw the cover. Even so, I was not disappointed. The illustrations were extremely colorful and they did a great job of telling the story. The second aspect of this book that I enjoyed was the rhymes. The rhymes were perfect for the target audience and unlike some rhyming books, I didn’t find it repetitive at all. The author used the rhymes to tell a somewhat realistic story about how a house cat might react to living with a new cat. As a whole, this story teaches show more children about the importance of sharing and getting along with your peers. show less
This book is excellent for showing kids how much fun it can be to share and make new friends. The illustration makes the cats in the story look more like arts and crafts ideas that the kids would probably have a lot of fun recreating.nThe reading level is a 1.5.
This story about 2 cats would be great to read with new big brothers and sisters. The top cat didn't want to share his space with another cat, but in the end they formed an unexpected friendship.
I would use this book as an interactive read aloud in grades K-1. I would use this in K-1 grades because it is an easy read and students at this age are new to school and may not have any sibling to experience sharing space with so will help teach the importance of sharing. I would also use this book to help students practice identifying figurative language or rhyming.
Top Cat is about a kitten who finds a cat. The cat tries to tell him to do bad things that can get him in trouble. They stick together even though the older cat was not a fan of it.
