Description

This book is about how pictures represent. Do they, like words, depend on human conventions for their meaning, or do they instead exploit something else--perhaps by looking like what they represent? The problem is philosophical, but it has also interested psychologists and art historians. Robert Hopkins examines and criticizes the currently available answers to this question before proposing and defending one of his own, and concludes with an attempt to see what a proper understanding of show more picturing can tell us about that deeply mysterious phenomenon, the visual imagination. show less

An incisive, even-handed analysis of our ever enigmatic, many-faceted 16th president. An oldie but goodie, and a superb character study. You try to figure the guy out!
Has some very interesting information I didn't know much about, but also has some very questionable information and viewpoints he goes off in a titrate about so you question the validity of the new information. Covers two haphazard points of view, not necessarily apposing and you wonder what was the point comparison he is trying to make, thus some new view points to add to my research.
