Another one in the "... for Dummies" series, this book is designed to give people who don't know the first thing about Jazz a start on it. And it works really well. From describing the roots from which this music evolved to specifying the different styles and giving the names and dates of some of the greatest and most influencial jazz musicians. As someone who honestly did know almost nothing about it, I'm proud to say I learned quite a bit by reading this book. To me the best thing were the album recommendations - all over the book you'll find recommended recordings of the featured artists or styles of jazz. An enormous help for beginners to find through the jungle of discs available.
