Description

The dazzling spectacle presented by the armies of medieval Japan owed much to the highly developed family and personal heraldry of samurai society. From simple personal banners, this evolved over centuries of warfare into a complex system of flags worn or carried into battle, together with the striking 'great standards' of leading warlords. While not regulated in the Western sense, Japanese heraldry developed as a series of widely followed practices, while remaining flexible enough to show more embrace constant innovation. Stephen Turnbull is an Honorary Lecturer at Leeds, a Research Associate at SOAS and Visiting Professor of Japanese Studies at Akita International University. He is a leading expert on the military history of Europe and the Far East and the author of more than fifty books on the subject. His expertise was also put to use in helping design the show more award-winning computer strategy game Shogun Total War, and in 2010 he acted as Historical Adviser to Universal Pictures fro the movie 47 Ronin. show less
