Description

Healing Wise sets forth the foundations of the Wise Woman Tradition, contrasting them with the Heroic and Scientific views of healing. "Weeds draw us into ancient wisdom in a clear and refreshing way," says herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. I see the Wise Woman. She carries a blanket of compassion. She wears a robe of wisdom. From her shoulders, a mantle of power flows. She ties the threads of our lives together. I see the Wise Woman. And she sees me. Seven herbs -- burdock, chickweed, dandelion, show more nettle, oatstraw, seaweed, and violet -- are explored in depth. Each monograph includes the "voice" of the herb, a weed walk to encounter the herb in its environment, detailed instructions for harvesting and preparation, properties and uses for every part of the herb, pertinent facts, fun folklore, and recipes for gourmet foodstuffs, wines, beers, cosmetics, and more. show less

This book is a true gem - a timeless classic of herbal medicine. What I particularly like about it is the in depth look into 7 different herbs (instead of just superficial info on 30 or more herbs). I especially love the first part which contrasts and compares the Wise Woman, Heroic, and Scientific approaches to healing.

Although this book is mainly focused on women's health, everyone can benefit from the information in it as the 7 herbs covered are nutrient and mineral dense.

This is one of the books that I refer to again and again as I find a new treasure each time I open it.
This book is, quite simply, something else. I couldn't get through the first section without skimming, it was just way too Earth-Mother for my taste.

The sections on the "weeds" were cool but I found it annoying how she wrote from the weed perspective, and I had to completely skip the dandelion section which was in a fake French accent.

Read this book only if you don't mind reading stuff like "Think of chickweed as increasing your permeability to solar, lunar, universal and cosmic energies." This book goes way beyond hippie.

there's only two reasons this book didn't get five start - the cover design and the annoying fake french accent in one of the chapters. the cover design is freaky, i admit, but really, the info inside is pretty amazing and very understandable.

To everyone concerned with personal and planetary health, this book speaks as a vital messenger and a call to wholeness from the mother earth."Twylah Nitsche, Yehwehnode Two Wolves, Seneca Elder, Wolf Clan"One of the most powerful spokespersons of the herbal movement, Susun Weed introduces a marvelous sense of vitality and originality to herbalism. A Poet, artist, and visionary, Weed draws us into ancient wisdom in a way that is clear and refreshing. I recommend Healing Wise highly-there is good medicine in these teachings."Rosemary Gladstar, Founder California School of Herbal Studies
