A surveillance expert worries he might be involved in something dangerous. It's a character study taking place next door to a thriller. The concept shouldn't work, but it does, with too-slow sections giving way suddenly to intense moments.

He won his first Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival with The Conversation, which he wrote and directed.
