Description
A man, an axe, and a dog named Fuzzy ... let the adventure begin! Trapped in a job he hated and up to his neck in debt, Guy Grieve's life was going nowhere. But with a stroke of luck, his dream of escaping it all to live in the remote Alaskan tundra suddenly came true. Miles from the nearest human being and armed with only the most basic equipment, Guy built a log cabin from scratch and began carving a life for himself through fishing, hunting, and diligently avoiding bears. Packed with show more adventure, humor, and insight, this is the gripping story of an ordinary man learning the ways of the wild. show lessTags

caimanjosh Both feature competent yet perhaps neurotic Brits who abandon normal life and go live by themselves for a time. One in a tropical paradise, the other in a frigid wilderness. I thought "My Escape to Alaska" to be the more interesting of the two, but definitely readers who enjoyed one should consider the other.

He can't explain why he did it. So, the inconvenience to his family while he plopped down in Alaska for months lacking skills and supplies has mysterious motivations. His success is due to the generosity and kindness of strangers stemming from the implicit imposition of his needy presence. It feels like a saga of selfishness lacking in honest self-reflection.
Fantastic book. The courage it took to travel around the world and spend a year in the wilds of Alaska cannot be ignored. The writing style is engaging and really drew me into the book. I genuinely grew to care for Grieve and his dogs and the other people he encountered on his adventure.
