Before Columbus: The Leif Eriksson Expedition: A True Adventure (Landmark Books) by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel (themulhern)
themulhern: One book is a beautifully illustrated piece of literature which covers somewhat more history, one is written for older children, much more dry and truly historical. But the subject is pretty much the same and they go pretty well together.

Brendan the Navigator by Jean Fritz (themulhern)
themulhern: Two well illustrated and wittily told books for children about early seafarers and explorers.

The beautiful decorations on the illustrations really make this book. As a child I loved especially the dramatic illustration of Leif with the dragon figurehead. I was surprised to find that Leif lived in very historical times, maybe only 50 years or so before the Norman conquest of England. ( )

Can also be tied into American history along with the story of St. Brendan the Navigator. This is the tale of a young explorer who finds his way to Newfoundland and who is converted to Christianity.

A large format picture book, with many colour illustrations, the originals painted on stone. I loved this book as a child, and remember the images very well. ( )
