Murder Can Be Fun

A Plot for Murder by Fredric Brown was a fun read. Imagine being a radio script writer and having a batch of possible murder mystery plots to suggest a new radio program and then opening a newspaper to learn that one of your plots has been used to carry out a real murder. Coincidence maybe, until a second death also copies one of your plots. Bill Tracy needs to stay one stop ahead of the cops till he figure this out. An aside - I love the pulp fiction covers, they almost never have anything to do with the plot! Well Tracy does carry a female, but she's fully clothed and only drunk (well maybe she's dead.) Such fun. Exactly what pulp fiction should be... it was never meant to be literary, it was just a good read. None of it could be show more considered politically correct in this day and age, but I'm willing to say that's the norm for the period and just enjoy the story. show less

I dunno. There's some good bits in here, but otoh overall it seems as if all that drinking on the part of the characters in Brown's mysteries was catching up on the author. There's not a really good mystery here, imo. And the drinking is def. too much overkill, and the ending is wrong, and it's more sexist than Brown usually is. I actually am giving this only 2.5 stars rounded up because it's still better than most generic genre crap out there and I wish Brown had lived longer and written more.

Reread one more time before sending off to another fan. Opinion stands. One thing that I particularly enjoyed this time is the mc, a writer, staring down the typewriter. He has writer's block. Turns out for a good reason, but in the meantime, he show more does the pacing, and the typing randomly, and whatever else he can think of to get started....

I do like Brown's writing. Even with all the flaws, even when he writes pulp mystery thrillers (which is a genre I do not normally enjoy at all). I wish more ppl read him. show less

Bill Tracy, que fuera periodista, trabaja como guionista de radionovelas para la KRBY neoyorkina. Reporter turned radio scriptwriter finds himself puzzled and under suspicion when someone turns two of his unproduced script ideas into actual murders - which seem to have no relationship to each other. Is it a mad psychopath? As always, Brown's writing is engaging and puts you in a good mood, but the story meanders around too much as our hero thinks about what to do and concentrates more on romancing the two women in his life. And of course, drinking an incredible amount of alcohol from morning 'til night. I need to go back and count, but there was one day he must have had 20 drinks. In the end, the light bulb goes on and he figures the whole thing out! But it isn't anything the reader could have figured out, so this book really show more doesn't play fair. Las dos primeras novelas de Fredric Brown comportaban el protagonismo del joven Ed Hunter y su tío Am; la segunda (“La viva imagen”) ha sido publicada en esta colección. Inmediatamente después Brown escribió El asesinato como diversión (“Murder Can Be Fun”, reeditada con el titulo “A Plot for Murder”) y en ella hizo patente su admiración a Lewis Carroll y al mundo maravilloso de Alicia, con lo que se avanzaba a los contenidos de su obra maestra “La noche a través del espejo”.
