Lorsque la Première Guerre mondiale commence, en août 1914, l'Europe entière est convaincue qu'elle sera brève. Personne ne peut imaginer les souffrances et les horreurs que vont endurer des hommes appartenant à des sociétés si avancées.
Plus de 250 000 poilus périssent durant les premiers mois de l'offensive. Quatre années de carnage et de désespoir s'ensuivent, qui changent radicalement l'image du combattant : en 1914, il monte au front avec l'illusion d'une victoire rapide. En 1917, il sait qu'il va à la mort. En 1918, équipé de grenades, appuyé par des chars et des avions, il s'agit déjà du combattant de 1940.
Le poilu est le héros sacrifié au début de ce conflit de trente ans. Dans cet ouvrage de référence devenu un classique, Pierre Miquel nous en raconte l'inimaginable tragédie.
