Often, the second book of a series can be a let-down - not this time. It certainly helps if you have read book 1, and I would suggest it's essential. At first, the narrative is quite complex, moving with different groups of people in several different locations. By the time you get halfway the pace of the story really quickens with twists and turns and a few surprises. For the last 25% and it really becomes a 'can't put it down' book. All the time you are gently being introduced to the historic Egyptian culture. A great read.
This isn’t my first time diving into a Murray Bailey universe, and it likely won't be the last. All the hallmarks of Bailey’s writing remain present here, weaving concepts together to really create a strong, detailed plot.

Agent Charlie Rebb and her partner Zhang are introduced to the adventure of this book early on when the body of a missing person is uncovered. This journey eventually leads us to an archaeologist in Egypt thrust into the middle of a sinister mystery, accused of murder, and on the brink of an amazing discovery.

This book really operates at the intersection of technology and ancient messages, with a peppering of urgency and danger that keep the reader engaged in this fast-paced thriller.

Great book, definitely worth show more the read (as is the series!) show less
‘Looks like the Surgeon is back.’ – A fascinating conspiracy thriller

UK author Murray Bailey has published thirty-six novels and now continues his successful The Egyptian Stones Series with THE MARK OF ETERNITY, once again plunging the reader into a mystery that consumes attention to the end. Weaving a conspiracy thriller with exploration of ancient history, Bailey now brings FBI Special Agent Charlie Rebb into focus, and a fine distillation of the plot is provided: ‘When FBI Special Agent Charlie Rebb learns that the Surgeon — a serial killer thought long dead — may be alive, she expects a hunt for a monster from the past. Instead, she finds a new string of murders marked by strange symbols. The trail runs from the U.S. to show more Egypt, where archaeologist Alex MacLure has uncovered ancient clues tied to a forgotten symbol — and a buried secret. When MacLure is framed for murder, he and Rebb are forced together in a race to stop the Surgeon. Before he completes a plan millennia in the making.’

Bailey captures our attention as the book opens: ‘When he first saw the flesh in the dog’s jaws, Eddie didn’t think much of it. His two hounds were often finding bones. Only this time it was different. The dogs had been running out by the church. And when he took the human hand from Deion’s jaws, Eddie worried he’d be in trouble…’Descriptive atmosphere painting is but one fine aspect of this engrossing novel – a high-quality book that will satisfy the most selective reader. Very highly recommended

The Mark of Eternity by Murray Bailey is a fast-paced thriller that blends modern crime with ancient mystery. As FBI Special Agent Charlie Rebb investigates the possible return of a serial killer known as the Surgeon, she is drawn into a chilling series of murders marked by cryptic symbols.

The story moves between the United States and Egypt, where archaeologist Alex MacLure uncovers ancient clues tied to a buried secret. When he becomes a suspect himself, the tension escalates, forcing an uneasy alliance as the race to stop a calculated killer intensifies.

Bailey keeps the pacing tight, balancing investigative suspense with historical intrigue. The shifting locations and archaeological elements add depth, while the central mystery show more gradually unfolds toward a larger, more ancient conspiracy.

Overall, The Mark of Eternity is an engaging blend of crime thriller and historical puzzle, ideal for readers who enjoy action-driven plots with a touch of ancient-world mystery.

The Mark of Eternity is the second book of a planned trilogy by Murray Bailey. It follows the first book well using many of the original characters and adds new characters and places. Character and place descriptions are well written as is the plot. I enjoyed this book as much as the first. It wasn't the letdown that I expect from most second books.
I recommed the first book and highly recommend it. It is a very good read and I am looking forward to the next one.

The Mark of Eternity by Murray Bailey is the second book in the Egyptian Stones series. It is an interesting story involving a serial killer in the US and Egypt and a search for an ancient Egypt artifact. The FBI is investigating a serial killer in the Atlanta region. The primary link to all of the killings is the method of killing and a series of tattoos on the bodies. During the investigation, a tie to killings in Egypt is developed after the killer is believed to have fled to Egypt.

The serial killer is involved in a secretive sect in the US that is also searching an ancient Egyptian/early Christian relic in Egypt.
