Qu'en est-il de nos passions ?
Dans ce roman courent les bruits de notre monde, ses éruptions de liberté. On y entend surtout l'amoureuse mélodie de Marianne et de Simon, deux êtres qui essaient d'inventer une passion inusable. Armé d'étranges blessures qui lui tiennent lieu de mémoire, Simon le rêveur aime les villes au crépuscule. Marianne, elle, voudrait retrouver le goût des sentiments solennels et immobiles. Mais leurs sentiments, comme les continents, dérivent...
On rencontrera aussi le mystérieux Kaspar Geoges Becker (K.G.B.) en train d'écrire un roman que traversent les convultions de l'ancienne Europe; et encore madame Dior en conciège excentrique. Rosa la fragile, Marcella, Lucien le petit garçon qui croit aux miracles et attend les cygnes sauvages - personnages réels ou fictifs qui s'essaient à la trversée des miroirs.

La Dérive des sentiments est aussi une variation mélancolique sur la création littéraire, où le narrateur veut croire que les histoires qu'il imagine pourront transformer la vie et les êtres qui les traversent.
