Description

The dramatic and tormented life of Jerry Lee Lewis is the most fabled in rock 'n' roll history. Hellfireis a wild, riveting, and beautifully written biography that received universal acclaim on its original publication and is now an American classic. Born in Louisiana to a family legacy of great courage and greater madness, Jerry Lee was torn throughout his life between a harsh Pentecostal God and the Devil of alcohol, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. He began performing publicly at fourteen, and show more at twenty-one he recorded 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On', which propelled him to stardom. Almost immediately, news of his marriage to his thirteen-year-old cousin all but destroyed his career. Over the next twenty years, Jerry Lee, ever indomitable and ever wild, would rise again as a country star, and then lose it all again to his own inner demons. Hellfireis a brilliant, audacious journey into the soul of a rock 'n' roll legend, and into the soul of rock 'n' roll itself. show less

The Killer, Mr Jerry Lee Lewis, is a unique figure in musical history and it's easy to forget how close he was to usurping Elvis's crown as the King of rock n' roll. "Hellfire" recounts how he brought his kingdom to its fall.

Tosches writes well and has his pulse on the Killer's style, giving Lewis the right mix of sacred and profane. The book is dated now, finishing in the late 1970s, but perhaps it's better that way, rather than reading more on the slow, sad decline of the greatest musician of all time.
This was ridiculous crazy ass fun. If I think too much about it, I might get offended, so I won't. But I loved it.
The paragon of musical biography. Though it ends about 1980, it discusses the music and life of the early rocker and rocking country great, through fame, obscurity, drugs, and drink.
Today, December 13 2005, is the first anniversary of this blogging endeavor and as I awoke, I became tinged with ambition. Unaccustomed to such impulses, I began to read Hellfire: The Jerry Lee Lewis story by Nick Tosches. In almost a single sitting i read the book, enjoying six double espressos, a large cigar, two eggs (w/ bread) and several hours of outstanding music, including Bix, Blind Boys of Alabama, George Jones, James Carter, Charlie Parker and Ryan Adams. I am finished, refreshed, and bewildered by the world in all its pristine torrent.
One of the most satisfying and stimulating Rock Biographies I've ever read
