The Death of Death in the Death of Christ
by John Owen
On This Page
Description
The Death of Death in the Death of Christ is a polemical work, designed to show, among other things, that the doctrine of universal redemption is unscriptural and destructive to the gospel. Those who see no need for doctrinal exactness and have no time for theological debates which show up divisions between evangelicals may well regret its reappearance. Some may find the very sound of Owen's thesis so shocking that they will refuse to read his book at all. It is to those who share this show more readiness that Owen's treatise is offered, in the belief that it will help us in one of the most urgent tasks facing evangelical Christendom today-the recovery of the gospel. show lessTags

This is not for the faint of heart, but Owen's work on the atonement is a classic defense of the limited atonement position. The introduction by Packer is excellent and provides a great roadmap for understanding Owen's theology and argument as a whole.
This is a tough book to get through...Owen wrote in the 17th century and uses some words that aren't even in the dictionary any more! If you do get through it, you will have read the strongest defense of one of the most difficult aspects of Calvinism.
JI Packer's introductory essay is an excellent, concise defense of Reformed theology in itself.

Read Owen... And we need to read him more often.... This is almost polemical and some great big truths to chew on.
Not an easy read by any means, but well worth the effort. The introduction by J.I. Packer is worth the price of admission.
