The second Perry Mason I’ve read also very interesting, lots of turns and an overall good read. A CEO of an oil company is involved in a proxy battle for his company. He is trapped at a hotel thinking he would receive information needed to win his battle when in fact a young woman is found murdered. The full team is involved in the investigation and Perry “the Superman” as usual needs very little sleep and is kept going by smokes and coffee. This story is a bit different as Della gives Perry a kiss on the mouth, he thanks her and then drives off. Nothing more is even said. Followers of the Perry Mason series must have been very frustrated at their relationship, how can they have such strong feelings for each show more other and not have a sexual relationship? Della devotes her life to Perry and he repays her devotion with a paycheck. Maybe in the long run it is cheaper to keep this arrangement?

The book starts off very strong with the frame-up of a businessman for murder; however, by page 120, so many layers of the solution have already been revealed that the only thing left is to solve the murder, which shouldn't take 50 pages.
I really enjoyed this one. Again, this is one of the first Perry Mason's I ever read, and I can see why I embarked on a journey to read them all. I loved the operator who can identify people from their shoes. This also made for a good episode of the TV series.
This one was OK, no great shakes, but then it served its purpose as mindless entertainment. -1996
"Who found the body?"
"We did."
"That’s bad!"
"I know," Mason said, putting his arm around her shoulder and patting her reassuringly. "We always seem to be finding bodies."

This book was dedicated to Merton M. Minter MD, for his post retirement work to "study the problems of evidence, of law enforcement, and the part the citizen should play in co-operating with the various law enforcement agencies." From the preface. What a tribute!!! Stop reading this and read the book ASAP!!
