Starting with geology, on the solar system scale, and gradually focussing attention on the earth, through continental drift and the developments of deserts, the author zooms in on the details of life in the deserts, finally culminating in a study of the sand grouse of the Sahara. The sensitively written story of the adaptations of this bird should be required reading for those who see the deserts as waste-land.
