Description
Auriol Darcy is surprised attempting to remove the heads of two traitors from the Southwark Gateway of Old London Bridge. He is injured by the warder, Baldred, and carried to the house of Dr. Lamb, an alchemist and Auriol Darcy's grandfather, who is assisted by his faithful dwarf Flapdragon. Lamb, on the point of discovering the elixir of life, has a seizure and dies as his ungrateful grandson consumes the draught.Tags

This is unlike Ainsworth's other novels and is really a Gothic fantasy involving an elixir designed to give the drinker immortality. A lighthearted romp but with an ending that I personally felt to be a bit of a damp squib, though it may have been more original when the novel was published in 1844. My Kindle edition also contained a couple of unconnected pieces about a London gentleman and a short first person story at in Rome about a vendetta.
Surreysmum: The reason things don't tie together at the end is that the novel was published unfinished at the author's death.
A fine Gothic, pennydreadful-ish piece of entertainment
