In this book, Hugh Corbett solves another medieval mystery. This time Hugh Corbett went to Scotland following the 'accidental' death of Alexander III of Scotland to investigate the circumstances on behalf of the Chancellor. I really enjoyed the medieval nature of the plot and especially the journey to the dark forest in Scotland to visit the Picts, often referred to as pixies, goblins or elves. "Once they were a proud people and ruled the greater part of Scotland but the Celts, the Angles, the Saxons and the Normans drove them from their lands into the dark vastness of the forests."
I thoroughly recommend this author to anyone who enjoys medieval mystery and intrigue.

Anyone interested in English medieval murder and mystery will enjoy this series. This is the second book about the medieval sleuth Hugh Corbett, who works for the Chancellor of England under King Edward I. Sent to Scotland to investigate the death of the Scottish King Alexander III, Corbett is met with suspicion as he investigates on the orders of his master. The book is rich in historical detail of places, characters, and events. An exciting plot, but at times the character's speculations become complicated, taking over the plot, and slowing the pace of the book a bit.
1286 and Hugh Corbett is sent to Scotland to investigate the death of Alexander III by the Chancellor of England, Burnell . Was his death on a stormy night murder, and if so who by. And does this action threaten England as the Scottish throne is left vacant with various fractions vying for this prize.
Enjoyed the story, a nice quick and easy read.

#2 in the Hugh Corbett medieval mystery series, in which the Chancellor sends Corbett north to Scotland to investigate the death of their King Alexander. An accident? Or a carefully plotted murder? This is a short book (under 200 pages) and yet it seemed to take me quite awhile to read. I find the writing style a bit plodding and difficult to get through, and my mind wandered a lot. The subject matter and detail did keep me interested enough to complete it, though. There are certainly many historical mystery series that I enjoy more and I’m not sure when I will get back to this one.
