Gattaca [1997 film]

A conventionally-born person hides in a society of engineered supermen.

Boring, and hopelessly in love with its own half-baked ideas. Niccol's idea of developing those ideas is to add more and more blunt metaphors, and not care that the movie does not work on a literal level. Lots of stuff happens which in a competently-written movie would be the elements of the plot, but in this movie, those things have almost no consequences. The characters must have been written by someone who's heard of human beings, but has never actually seen one in person. And the actors seem as bored with this movie as I am.

In un futuro “non troppo lontano” il mondo è governato dall'ingegneria genetica che divide gli esseri umani in Validi (concepiti in provetta col DNA manipolato) e Non Validi (gli altri, nati col vecchio sistema), considerati dei paria. Per diventare cosmonauta ed essere inviato su Titano, un Non Valido ribelle (Hawke) assume l'identità anagrafica di un Valido (Law) finito su una sedia a rotelle e suo complice. Pericoli e peripezie. 1° film del neozelandese Niccol, anche sceneggiatore. Il quadro, cioè il show more racconto, è la descrizione lambiccata, irrigidita e un po' esangue di una distopia, cioè di una società dagli aspetti negativi e indesiderabili per un eccesso di sviluppo tecnocratico e di controllo statale. Ne risentono specialmente i personaggi, che risultano inadeguati in questo “nuovo mondo” alla Huxley così totalitario e “soft” nella mimetizzata violenza dei poteri. show less
