This picture book uses detailed illustrations and a concise explanatory text to introduce young children to the airport. The book starts with a family driving to the airport, and follows their journey as they wait, check in, their luggage is loaded, they board the plane, and take off. Their story is told only through the pictures, though, as the text is just simple sentences that label the various components of airports and airplanes, such as the control tower or choosing a seat. The airplane is drawn in cross-section at one point, with different parts like the gas tank and the cargo hold identified. The book is straight-forward in its intention to introduce the workings of an airport, and it succeeds in its mission. The story is not show more thrilling, but the carefully drawn pictures are engrossing, and the book is a great tool to familiarize children with traveling by plane. show less
Sentences start on one page and end anywhere from 1-3 pages later. Each page will minimum 3 words per page. For example, the first page says, "In buses," the next page says, "and in cars" and it just continues on page by page with huge gaps in the middle of your sentence. It's a good book for an emergent reader. I definitely wouldn't bother reading it again, though. The main point of the story is teach kids what the process is like at an airport and a broad overview of what each job does.
One of the most popular read-alouds for pre-schoolers when I was working on an island, where all the children had a lot of experience with airports. Simple text, simple pictures -- they would get so excited as it reminded them of going on airplanes and of going to pick up parents and guests at airports.
The text is simple, but it goes through a basic airport experience with good drawings. A nice book to prepare a toddler for an airplane flight.
