I look at it now and see a book that could have been released this year. Neither style nor content seem dated to me at all. And, of course, that's another thing that makes is worthy of the Caldecott honor.
Again, this is all my opinion. Including the fact that, while I appreciate it, I don't actually enjoy it much; I don't find it engaging.?á
The stereotypical little boy who plays with 'Hot Wheels' cars probably adores it, though. I hope they made a board book for those children.?á"
I personally am not a fan of this book. It is well illustrated and a great example of a picture book. However, I found it hard to find a message or story in this picture book. It is wordless and is just the same truck in various places on his journey. I found it to be unclear what his journey was.
I loved the clean graphic look of this wordless book. There are several ways it encourages readers to make inferences: what can we tell about the signs, weather, traffic, direction the truck takes? The concept of getting from one place to another over time is also clearly presented.
Donald Crews chose to use no words in this book other than the street signs and the labels of the individual trucks, including the main red truck which read, "TRUCKING" on the side of the shipping container. Throughout the story, Donald Crews continued the same level of detail on the main red truck, but he would use less detail on certain pages, like when it is raining, to imply that it is harder to see for the driver. This is reinforced by the warning sign for "skidding". Donald Crews also begins and ends the story in the same setting, like he has in several of his other books, having the truck being loaded with its cargo on the first page and then ending the story as it being unloaded at its destination.
We've checked this out a couple of times, and my son and I have enjoyed it every time. There aren't any words in this book; just pictures of a truck's journey as he picks up his cargo, travels across states, and unloads his cargo. It has busy, descriptive pictures, and you can really make the story into whatever you want. Since there are no words, my son doesn't get distracted from the pictures. I think when he's older and starts making his own stories, he'll like this book because he'll be able to make it into whatever he wants. All in all, a great book if your little one is into trucks and cars and whatnot.
This book follows a truck during this driving routine but does not have a storyline. The point of the book is for early childhood students to be able to create their own stories using their imagination. There are a few words in the book such as signs that a truck driver would see on his/ her route. I love the illustrations because they are colorful and bold for students to see.
Follow a semi-truck while it delivers a shipment of tricycles. No words, but every time I turned the page I was still surprised and entertained. The composition of the illustrations and the variety of landscapes make an engaging book.
