Shadowmind is a strange book. There are a number of good aspects mixed in with plenty of bad. I’ll start with the negative. Editing was lacking throughout the book. There were a lot of mistakes. Too much time was given to introducing people that were about to die. Sure, it’s fine to know a little something, but it became redundant towards the end. Too much techno babble about space stuff existed throughout. The cover art, created by the author, was dreadful. Perhaps, though, the worst part of the story was that the Doctor played only a marginal role, and when he was involved, he seemed to be a willing participant in various military endeavors. On the other hand, the story wasn’t terrible. There were plenty of action events and show more some brief suspense. This was especially the case from about page 40 through 180 or so. While I found the story interesting, it didn’t strike me as being much of a Doctor Who novel. show less

A decent enough Seventh Doctor, Ace and Benny story, with human colonists wandering into an existing struggle between two alien entities. I didn't think Bulis quite got Benny in this one but he has an excellent Ace and good Doctor. A really good ending which would have made great TV especially for New Who, as the Bad Alien Entity is put out of action by a bright idea of the Doctor's. Would be an OK book for Who fans who don't know the New Adventures, less useful for non-Who fans wanting to experiment.
