One of the weaknesses of Emotional Intelligence as a professional development book is that it focused mainly on academic research which, in turn, focused mainly on children and education. This book sets out to present the same material using research about the working world (generally from business consultants and companies looking at their own workforce).

I felt the book suffered from a lack of strong organization. Where Emotional Intelligence was strongly structured around the 5 core emotional intelligence competencies, Working with Emotional Intelligence went over a much longer list of attributes which were loosely coupled to those 5 core ideas. Thus, while the book had valuable content overall, it covered so much that it was almost show more inevitably going to come off as somewhat scattered without an extremely strong organizing principle. show less

In Working with Emotional Intelligence, Goleman reveals the skills that distinguish star performers in every field, from entry-level jobs to top executive positions. Self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-control; commitment and integrity; the ability to communicate and influence, to initiate and accept change -- these show more competencies are at a premium in today's job market. The higher up the leadership ladder you go, the more vital these skills become, often influencing who is hired or fired, passed over or promoted.
