A good Goodis!

As usual, the main character's obsessional relationship with a woman is the start of his problems, and his refusal to give her up the catalyst for his downfall.

I liked the use of flashback to tell the story of Whitey's descent. It was reminiscent of the Paris flashback in "Casablanca", but dark, twisted and without a trace of noble sentiment at the end.

I really liked Lieutenant Pertnoy and wish Goodis had made more use of him: a very unusual police officer.

Intense, heavy read, definitely needs a re-read

¿Qué había sumido a Whitey en ese interminable sueño alcohólico? ¿Quién tenía interés en que la ciudad viviera en un permanente estado de motín enfrentando a los portorriqueños contra los anglos? ¿Qué victoria era posible en medio de tanta derrota? Para saber qué le estaba sucediendo. Whitey tenía que husmear no sólo en el presente, sino que tenía que iniciar un viaje terrible a su propio pasado, un acto de buceo mortal en la memoria. Y lo que iba a encontrar no podía gustarle.
